India consults UN on future of its peace mission in Congo

With Indian peace-keepers coming under fire in the raging battle between government and rebel forces in Congo, India is seriously weighing its options vis-a-vis its UN-sponsored mission in the war-ravaged African nation.
India has also expressed "concern" over the latest developments in Congo, where three Army personnel, including a Lieutenant Colonel, were injured after being attacked with rockets in the course of a battle between government and rebel forces recently.

"We are very much concerned about the latest developments there. Because we are (caught) in between (government and rebel forces) now. It is a very serious development," Defence Minister A K Antony told reporters here, on the sidelines of the ongoing Navy Commanders Conference.

Asked if India was having a re-think about its peace-keeping role in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Antony said, "We have already taken it up with the United Nations for future course of action." However, he did not elaborate on what were the options before India in the wake of its troops coming under attack and several other countries refusing to do the peace-keepers' role in the troubled northern Kivu province.

"Already I told you we are very much concerned about the latest developments there and that is why we have already taken up with the UN about the future course of our peace-keeping....We now have to proceed for the future," he said, when asked about the possible outcome of it taking up the matter with the UN. India free to Nuke bomb: Pranab

India on Monday said it was free to make a nuclear bomb should it feel it necessary to do so keeping in view the regional geo-political situation and the country's defence requirements.

Addressing a seminar here, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said India was free to make a nuclear bomb should the government feel it necessary to do so keeping in view the regional geo-political situation and the country's defence requirements.

"Just as India has the right to make a nuclear bomb, countries who are against it have the right to oppose. Among the 185 countries in the world, there are big powers like the U S and very small countries like Fiji and the Solomon Islands. All are sovereign and have equal rights," he said.

Asserting that the Indo-US nuclear deal would not compromise India's independent foreign policy, Mukherjee said, "our foreign policy is aimed at extending our national interest in the context of the international situation."

He said the deal was aimed at using nuclear science for civilian purposes, he said it was not a military deal

India was, however, following the 'no first strike' policy announced by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee after the Pokhran tests in 1998. "We continue with this policy because it was announced by a Prime Minister and not by a BJP leader."

Mukherjee said the main purpose of the deal was to obtain the technology for clean energy as it has become necessary to meet the country's growing energy needs in an environmentally sustainable manner.

The deal also enabled India to break the nuclear apartheid, he said, adding, "when I was Defence Minister, I learnt that scientists from the DRDO were not being allowed to attend international seminars on the allegation that they were involved in making the nuclear bomb."

Secretary-General welcomes latest effort to resolve Zimbabwean impasse

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed today’s initiative of regional leaders in Southern Africa to hold a summit in Harare, Zimbabwe, to resolve the outstanding issues to a power-sharing deal for a new government in the troubled and impoverished country, warning of the humanitarian consequences if the impasse does not end soon.
The summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) security troika “provides a critical opportunity for the leaders to finalize in good faith the formation of the new government based on an equitable division of power, and to move swiftly to implement the 15 September agreement on resolving the many serious challenges facing Zimbabwe,” his spokesperson said in a statement.

“The Secretary-General reiterates the United Nations’ willingness to support Zimbabwe throughout this delicate transition process and to work with regional leaders and the international community to provide immediate relief to the suffering of its people.”

Mr. Ban said in the statement that he was alarmed that the ongoing political crisis, which dates back to disputed elections early this year involving the incumbent President Robert Mugabe and the opposition figure Morgan Tsvangirai, is taking a “growing human cost.” He added that signs indicate Zimbabwe’s humanitarian situation may only worsen through next year.

“He is deeply concerned that the population of Zimbabwe in both rural and urban areas faces many challenges, including critical shortages of all food, essential drugs, basic services, and clean water. It is urgent to resolve the ongoing political impasse so that recovery can begin.”

Earlier this month the UN World Food Programme (WFP) appealed for $140 million to provide vital rations over the next six months to Zimbabweans, with estimates that more than five million residents are now facing severe food shortages.

Cops confirm Kerala link of four terrorists

In what vindicates recent reports about Kerala becoming a new recruitment ground for jihadi terror, police has confirmed that the four mil
itants killed in a recent encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara were from the southern state. According to police sources, two of the dead militants have been identified as Abdul Faiz from Kannur and Muhammad Yasir, alias Verghese Joseph of Kochi, who converted to Islam about a year back.

Two weeks ago, investigators had established the identities of Mohammad Fayas from Kannur and Abdul Rahim from Malappuram, the other militants from Kerala killed in the encounter. The identities of the two others were confirmed in a report submitted by a superintendent of police in Kerala to Jammu and Kashmir police, following reports that all the four killed youths recruited by militants were from Kerala. Police suspect that one of the militants’ associate, also hailing from Kerala, might have escaped during the encounter. Reports from Kerala said a search was on in northern part of the state to nab him.

The signs of Kerala’s links in the LeT module surfaced when religious literature in Malayalam was found from the body
of those killed.

Kerala has been on the investigators’ map for the past few months. The terrorists, who were responsible for attacks in various Indian cities, were trained in camps at Beenamipuram in Eranakulam and Vagamon’s Thangalpara.

Reports from Kochi said the police on Sunday arrested Faisal, who is suspected to be a vital link in a network for identifying, recruiting and sending youths from Kerala for terrorist activities outside the state. The police team came to know about the key role of Faisal in enrolling potential ultras after the arrest of one Abdul Jaleel from Kannur last week.

Meanwhile, another report from Kochi said parents of two youths killed in the encounters have virtually denounced their sons for their alleged extremist links and anti-national activities. While the mother of one of them came out with strong words against the anti-national activities in which his son was allegedly involved, the father of the other told the police that his family did not want to claim the body of his son killed in Kupwara area earlierthis month.

The Left government in Kerala has said that it will take firm steps against fundamentalist terror. The government has been maintaining that jihadi terrorism has the active support of the NDF, an organisation based in northern Kerala. The state police considers the NDF as the main force behind the increase in Muslim radicalism in the state. Recently, the group has been behind the campaigns against school uniforms, singing Vande Mataram in schools and lighting of traditional lamps.

Review: 'True Blood' 8, 'Fourth Man in the Fire,' back from undead

So Bill is back from the, um, undead in the Oct. 26 eighth episode, "Fourth Man in the Fire," on "True Blood." Of course Bill didn't die; not that he's safe forever, but it's just the first season. And in case you were scratching your head trying to remember who the fourth man in the fire was, Neil (Kevin McHale) is the young guy who showed up each time they had to drag a body away, including Sookie's Gran.

Sookie's (Anna Paquin) concern for Bill (Stephen Moyer) was touching. (Somehow she always managed to have a cute outfit out when she sees him, whether she knows it or not.) The coming-out-of-grave lovefest was both sexy and strangely disturbing. Sookie telling Bill to bite her not on the neck (where people can see) shows she's not quite as comfortable about what people think of her having a vamp boyfriend as she might pretend.

The exchanges betwen Amy (Lizzie Caplan) and Jason (Ryan Kwanten) are pretty humorous. Something gets lost in the translation between Amy's hippy-dippy musings and Jason's very literal interpretation. Amy, being the first person who expects much of anything out of Jason, is naturally the one he opens up to about how his parents died and how he's the "worst brother in the world." Too bad it turns out Amy is a psycho for the V juice.

So was it Sookie telling Amy about Jason's usual fickle ways with women that led to her sudden urge for another dose of V? Because she turned seriously scary when she and Jason showed up at the vampire Eddie's house. (Stephen Root, "Pushing Daisies" or perhaps better known as Milton the stapler lover from "Office Space.") Obviously, she's done this kind of thing before -- you don't just happen to have silver-mesh hoodies on hand and enjoy a hobby of making silver lariat necklaces. At least Jason starts to see that Amy isn't exactly making sense (as she goes on about prey and the hunt) in her desire to make excuses for scoring V juice.

The source of Lafayette's (Nelsan Ellis) V supply, Eddie, was an interesting reveal. Here's a sad sack vampire who enjoys listening to The Bangles' "Eternal Flame." (The vampire's perfect love song.) Of course, any vampire who is willing to give up their blood for little else in return would have to have a pretty compromised ego.

Sookie certainly has a lot on her mind, between her grandmother and, at the time, believing Bill might be dead, but her blowing up at Tara -- who essentially grew up without much of a mother -- is one of those moments that makes Sookie a not entirely sympathetic character. Maybe that's a good thing.

Can I just say I'm gleeful that Todd Lowe, who plays Terry Bellefleur (i.e. "I like your voice, and your clavicles") has been upgraded to an official member of the cast for the second season. He is hilarious, and the only completely pure character. Is there any connection to his wearing a necklace made from possum parts and the possum who was drowned after Lettie Mae's (Adina Porter) demon was exorcised?

So the dilemmas between a human and a vampire continue with Sookie realizing she'll never have breakfast with Bill -- at least without him eventually becoming engulfed in flames. But they got to play house for a little while when they babysat Arlene's kids. I loved that Arlene gave Cody and Lisa her silver bracelets when she realized Bill was tagging along. (Speaking of the babysitting, what was with Sookie coming downstairs in her nightie?) It was cute to see Bill interacting with the kids; probably a bit painful for him. He actually smiled, which seems to go against the rules of the modern vampire -- they brood, they don't grin.

This episode's cliffhanger, with Sookie figuring out that the thief at Fangtasia is the vampire bartender, Longfellow (Raoul Trujillo), and him then lunging at her, isn't really much of a cliffhanger. Of course Sookie will survive this. But here's where BIll gets himself into trouble. Although why no one else would intervene is questionable: the vamp was stealing from the bar and attacking Sookie, a valuable resource for Eric.

Best quotes:

Jason to Amy, "I want to lick your mind."

Vampire Eddie to Lafayette: "I always look forward to Mondays. First, 'Heroes' and then you."

Sookie: "Watch your feet, I just waxed." Tara: "I hope you mean the floors."

Bill to Eric about why he didn't return his text messages: "I don't like using the number keys to type."

A few more drops:

The Rev. Steve Newlin who is the vamp-hating preacher shown on the TV show Eddie is watching, "The Fang Philes," is Michael McMillian. He played Henry on "What I Like About You" and was in "The Hills Have Eyes II."

The tile song, "Fourth Man in the Fire" by Johnny Cash plays when Amy and Jason are sitting in the car waiting to go inside vamp Eddie's house.

So Eric has probably been alive for at least 200 years, and yet, the best title they can come up with for him is sheriff of Area 5?

Coming up next -- Episode 9, "Plaisir D'Amour"

Bill steps into save Sookie, which will puts him in the position of breaking the vampire code (who knew?) and forcing him to eventually have to answer to the council and the magistrate (Zelijko Ivanek). Although why anyone would blame him for stepping in is beyond me.

Sookie finds another very unpleasant surprise waiting for her at home, and Bill, who knows Sam is more than human and that being a vampire he can't protect Sookie at all hours, actually asks Sam to be her bodyguard. In Episode 10, Sam shares a secret with Sookie -- a shapeshiftery secret perhaps?

"Plaisir D'Amour" (song excerpt)

The joys of love last but a moment.
The grief of love lasts a lifetime.

Diwali Brings Indian Stock Traders Chance to Erase Record Loss

Arun Kejriwal will raise his pressed hands to his forehead tomorrow before lighting a lamp to welcome Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, praying she'll deliver a recovery from India's record stock market rout.

The 51-year-old investor will then join traders and brokers making ceremonial purchases of equities during a one-hour, late- night session at the Bombay Stock Exchange. Determined by the new moon, so-called Muhurat trading, held every year on Diwali, the festival of lights, is considered the most auspicious time to start investments, and to put aside losses from the past year.

``I'm going to pray for sanity to prevail in the market,'' said Kejriwal, who says this is his worst year for investing in equities. ``Markets have gone mad.''

The centuries-old tradition of seeking blessings at Diwali has taken on added impetus this year after the destruction of $1.3 trillion in investor wealth, more than India's annual economic output. Indian stocks have outperformed in the month after Diwali, compared with the 30 days before the festival, in nine of the past 10 years, Fidelity International said in a report from London on Oct. 20.

``Though the market looks like a dark tunnel right now, we will see a ray of light at the end,'' said Ulhas Chitharia, a broker at Hasmukh Lalbhai Share Brokers Pvt. in Mumbai, who trades during the Diwali session every year.

Celestial Guidance

Seeking celestial guidance is commonplace among India's 800 million-strong Hindu community, which plans weddings, opens new businesses, and chooses children's names according to the position of the stars and planets.

Astrologer Bejan Daruwalla says he doesn't need charts or company earnings to tell him global stock markets will rebound next year. He's got Ganesha, the Hindu god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles, on his side.

Stocks will rally by April as the rest of this year will be depressed, Daruwalla predicts, citing the movement of planets. Jupiter, the sign for banks, will change position around February, and that's when markets battered by the global financial crisis will start to rebound, Daruwalla says.

``Markets will be as happy as a young bride in April,'' explains Daruwalla, 78, who writes newspaper columns on astrology and says the number of investors seeking his advice has risen by 25 percent since the market plunged.

For investor Niranjan Koradia, the rally can't come soon enough. The Sensitive index had its biggest fall in four years on Oct. 24 and is on course to post its worst annual decline, as the turmoil in credit markets spurs concern the global economy may slip into a recession.

`Wiped Out'

``I have been investing in the stock market for the past 50 years but never seen a day like this,'' said Koradia, staring at the ticker tape of share prices outside the Bombay Stock Exchange, Asia's oldest bourse. ``Whether I invested one, two or even five years back, the wealth has been wiped out.''

Investors say using the orbiting of planets round the sun to predict future stock-prices isn't a guarantee that the markets will align.

``I prepare astrology charts daily to guide me in my trading bets,'' says Kishore Shah, 66, who lost 7 million rupees ($140,000) in wrong-way wagers on derivatives this year.

Shah's betting the market will rally from a three-year low after Nov. 3, when the Sun aligns with Mars, as the current combination of Saturn and the red planet is inauspicious. ``That will be a very good time to buy stocks,'' Shah said.

Attractive Valuations

The Sensex's plunge this year, after doubling in the past two years, has made stocks in Asia's third-largest economy cheaper, 27-year-old Hardik Chheda said in Mumbai.

The price to earnings ratio, a measure used to value a company's shares in relation to its profits, for the 30 stocks on the benchmark has dropped to 8.83 from 31.16 in January, when the index hit a record, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

``I don't know about the Diwali effect, but valuations have become too attractive to ignore,'' says Chheda, a six-year investor in the stock market who says he sold at the peak.

Mumbai-based investor Kejriwal said he will do his usual auspicious trades tomorrow and hope the gods will answer his prayers. ``We are very close to the bottom now,'' he said.

Pakistan arrests 4 over Marriot Hotel bombing

Pakistani police have arrested four men in connection with last month's suicide attack on a hotel that killed 54 people, authorities said.
The four are suspected of "indirect involvement" in the blast at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Police Chief Ahmad Latif said. They are the first known arrests in connection with the Sept 20 attack.

The attack was a reminder of the gathering threat posed by Islamist militants in nuclear-armed Pakistan.

Mr Latif said the men were arrested in different parts of Punjab province, but gave no more details. They were brought before an anti-terrorism court where a judge gave police permission to hold them for questioning for one week.

Militants in Pakistan have launched more than 90 suicide attacks on civilian, military and Western targets since July last year, killing nearly 1,200 people, according to military statistics.

Authorities have said they suspect the Marriott blast was carried out by terrorists based in the tribal regions near the border with Afghanistan.

Singer Jennifer Hudson's mom, brother found dead

The mother and brother of Jennifer Hudson were found shot dead Friday at a South Side home, and police were seeking a missing child who is the nephew of the singer and Oscar-winning actress. "We can confirm that there is an ongoing investigation concerning the deaths of Jennifer Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson," Hudson's personal publicist, Lisa Kasteler, said in a statement. "No further comment will be made and the family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult time."

Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said the deaths appeared to be the result of domestic abuse.

Deputy Chief Joseph Patterson said a family member entered the home around 3 p.m. Friday, found a woman shot on the living room floor and left to notify authorities. Responding officers found a man shot in the bedroom, Patterson said. There was no sign of forced entry.

Police tape blocked access to the large, white house, where a crowd gathered outside.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert for 7-year-old Julian King, and were seeking a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban. The child was the grandson of the female victim, Patterson said.

The alert said the child was possibly abducted, and accompanied by a man — considered armed and dangerous — who was a suspect in the double homicide investigation. Records with the Illinois Department of Corrections show the man, who has not been charged with a crime, is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle.

The two could also be in a teal or green Chrysler Concord with a temporary license plate, a left front headlight hanging out and scratches on the left side of the vehicle, police said.

The tragedy comes as Hudson, who grew up in Chicago, continues to reach new heights in her career. Her song "Spotlight" is No. 1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts and her recently released, self-tiled album debut and has been a top seller. She was featured in this year's blockbuster "Sex and the City" and is also starring in hit movie "The Secret Life of Bees."

She won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in 2007 for her role in "Dreamgirls." In an interview last year with Vogue, Hudson credited her mother with encouraging her to audition for "American Idol," which launched her career.

The singer, whose father died when she was a teenager, described herself as very close to her family. In a recent AP interview she said her family, which includes older siblings Julia and Jason, helped keep her grounded.

"My faith in God and my family, they're very realistic and very normal, they're not into the whole limelight kind of thing, so when I go home to Chicago that's just another place that's home," she said. "I stand in line with everybody else, or, when I go home to my mom I'm just Jennifer, (so she says), 'You get up and you take care of your own stuff.' And I love that; I don't like when people tell you everything you want to hear, I want to hear the truth, you know what I mean."

Hudson recently announced her engagement to David Otunga, best known for his stint on VH1's reality show "I Love New York."

Hudson's representatives would not disclose her whereabouts Friday. She had been scheduled to appear Monday in Los Angeles to collect an ensemble cast honor at the Hollywood Awards for "The Secret Life of Bees" with co-stars including Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah and Dakota Fanning.

AP Music Writer Nekesa Moody in New York contributed to this report.

Noble and Green Go for World Land Speed Record With Bloodhound SSC

Andy Green, the current owner of the World Land Speed Record, and Richard Noble, the previous record-holder, have announced their new Bloodhound Project that will eventually go after the 1,000-mph mark in a supersonic car. The current record stands at 763.053 mph.

The two are building the Bloodhound SSC, a combination of jet, rocket and piston-engine power that measures 42 feet and weighs more than 14,000 pounds. With Andy Green in the driver seat, the team is starting with an 800-mph bid in 2009, then moving on to a 900-mph run in 2010 and finally going for the 1,000-mph goal in 2011.

The car will accelerate from zero to 1,050 mph in just 40 seconds and will be more advanced than most current spacecraft. A Eurojet EJ200 fighter-jet engine will propel the car to 300 mph, where a purpose-built hybrid rocket will then kick in to boost the car to 1,000 mph. Although the location for the drive is not yet set in stone, Black Rock Desert, Nevada, is one of the venues under consideration.

DCW summons Bhandarkar over Fashion

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has summoned filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar after Kangana Ranaut claimed in an interview that she is
portraying the role of former model Gitanjali Nagpal in Bhandarkar’s latest, Fashion . Former model Nagpal was found begging on the streets of south Delhi last year.

Bhandarkar has been asked to personally appear before the commission on October 27 for a preview of Fashion before the members of the commission. The film is due for national release next Friday.

The Delhi Commission for Women has strong reservations on the release of the film. The commission claims the director and producer of the film did not seek the prior permission of DCW, before using Gitanjali's life as a plot in the film.

Barkha Singh, chairperson, DCW told TOI, "Gitanjali is currently staying with her mother and aunt in Haridwar and still recovering from the mental breakdown she went through. The commission had taken her under its wing and will not allow anyone to exploit her name or life without her consent.

The actress Kangana Ranaut has claimed that her character is inspired by Gitanjali's life and the name of the character is also Gitu. Everyone knows Gitu is Gitanjali's nick name.''

The commission has clarified that it doesn't want the film banned, but wants to ensure that Gitanjali's identity is protected.

"From the court hearings to the rehabilitation centre, it was the commission that took care of Gitu. Now she is trying to recuperate away from public life. We want to be sure the film in question does not show anything that is objectionable or derogatory to Gitanjali Nagpal's image or character, which in turn may affect her physical or mental health adversely.'' said Singh.

What is Bill Gates building in there?

Reports surfaced today that Bill Gates has started a new company called bgC3. The instantly forgettable name, which most bloggers have called a think tank to develop new ideas, has a new office and an unassuming logo.

If you recall, this is the Bill Gates who snuck into computer labs in high school to learn how to write computer code. The guy could conceivably take over the world. Yet the experts have surmised that bgC3 might operate like one of those celebrity "handlers" that filters ideas out to the Gates Foundation (which is mostly run by Melinda Gates) or to Microsoft, but might also have something to do with the Microsoft alum's day-to-day schedule and various business pursuits. It could also be a venture capital firm of some kind, helping young start-ups become Colossal Empires of Technology.

Silicon Valley insiders already know that Steve Jobs has a private office somewhere in Mountain View that he uses as a personal space. Maybe bgC3 is just a private firm for Gates to explore ideas? I don't think so. After all, what's with the mysterious C3 nomenclature? It must mean something, right? No one is talking. Techflash says the C might stand for company, as in Company Three. Or it might have something to do with being a Catalyst. The logo highlights the C3 name, but that could be temporary.

So here's what I think: Bill Gates never does anything small. He doesn't start small companies. He doesn't start small foundations -- the one he started intends to cure major diseases. Here's a few possible scenarios:

1. According to Wikipedia, C3 is a scientific term that has something to do with carbon. More specifically, C3 is a chemical symbol for tricarbon, which is found in space. That's right, folks: Bill Gates might be building the Microsoft of Space! Imagine the possibilities. Flying to the moon in your own personal spaceship instead of a personal computer -- now that is cool. Hopefully they won't run Vista.

2. If C3 is scientific in nature, it coudl be similar to 23andMe in mapping your DNA on the computer. I love this idea because there is no one else I want mapping my DNA than someone who built a computing empire brick by brick.

3. C3 is also an old command line interface, and the name bgC3 certainly sounds like something out of BASIC or C++. Maybe the new company will get back to basics -- a kind of CLI for the new millennium, possibly running in Linux. There is a precedence for this, you know. After all the raging success of Windows Server in the enterprise, the new trend is to use something called PowerShell -- a command line interface -- to control servers in your data center. You can string multiple commands together to do some very powerful things. Maybe bgC3 is planning some sort of command line resurrection.

4. Another possibility -- and this one is perhaps the most exciting -- is that bgC3 has something to do with the Web. (This blog is called Web 2.0 Watcher, so I have to write about the Web at least for a few minutes.) Microsoft loves Web incubation -- that's what Live Labs and Office Labs are all about. Maybe Bill Gates is planning on creating a bunch of really amazing Web 2.0 start-ups! Er, probably not.

5. The idea I like most, which I saved for the end: What if bgC3 is just a placeholder for a new company that will do everything? I mean, what if it is the next Microsoft? I always thought that Gates was limited by being in technology. What if Company Three is the real monolith -- part foundation, part tech, part oil and gas, part -- I don't know, travel. What if it's sort of a Heart Corporation that owns television stations, magazines, Web sites, newspapers -- but C3 even goes further. Maybe this is the real legacy, a conglomerate that will make Microsoft seem tiny, the start of somehting Really Big.

I don't know, either that or the guy just wanted a little more office space. Post what you think it is in comments.

Double whammy for Delhiites as schools demand fee hike

Schools in Delhi have been demanding an increase in their fees by a whopping 50 per cent. Also, the Sixth Pay Commission has ruled that teachers should get a 60 per cent raise. So, the schools say that to implement the raise, they need to charge parents more.

A committee will decide whether fee hike is ok by the end of November.

But the proposal for this dramatic hike couldn't come at a worse time -- middle class Delhi is already hit by volatile markets.

Lunch conversation at the Bagga house is now usually restricted to one topic -- the expected hike in school fees. Both children are in Modern School, one of Delhi's most expensive schools and the family is already stretched thin financially.

"It is going to be difficult. We have to see from where exactly the money would come. It's so much a burden for a single earner in the family. I can't even get a job at the age of 40. So, we have to cut down vacation and outings in the weekend. At a time when the economy is going down this is burden. My kids have stopped their extra curricular activities. Even for Diwali, we will not buy any gifts as the next fee we have to pay just after Diwali," said Pranjali Bagga, a worried parent.

Schools have already asked the government for permission to increase their fees by 50 per cent. And if that is sanctioned, Pranjali will spend an extra Rs 12,000 per month on her children's education.

So the family has started cutting corners.

"I wanted to do medical coaching but I have opted for a correspondence coaching since the former would charge more than a lakh which is not possible to pay after the fee hike," said Prajvi Bagga who studies in class XI in Modern School, Barakhamba.

Her 13-year-old brother Karmaditya offers some sacrifices too.

"I wanted my braces, but its not happening now. We haven't visited a theatre for ages. We bring DVDs on rent," said Karmaditya.

A committee consisting of parents, teachers and government officials will take a month to decide on how much schools can charge. The new fee will apply from December.

Parents and students can tell this committee what they think through a website -- edudel.nic.in.

Pranjali already knows what she's going to say in her email.

"Schools should rent out their halls or pull out money in some other way to pay teachers instead of taxing parents," she said.

It's a wishful thinking at a time when the entire city is re-doing its math to cope with the economic slowdown.

Bill O'Reilly on 'The View' Becomes Often Surreal, Bizarre

Bill O'Reilly, the pugnacious radio and TV personality, was on The View recently. O'Reilly had a great time mocking the ladies on The View, especially Joy Behar, and making controversial statements, such as calling Barack Obama a "communist."

The View is a kind of part political gab fest/part TV freak show. It is most famous when somebody says something outrageous on it, such as when Whoopie Goldberg openly feared the return of slavery or any time Rosie O'Donnell was on. Elisabeth Hasselbeck is usually a voice of reason, but hers is a lonely voice as she is outnumbered by her far left co-hosts.

Joy Behar maintains that The View is a serious, news making program since it gets mentioned in the New York Times often. Of course Ms. Behar may be unaware of how far into the tabloid the Times has descended in recent years, as evidence the hit piece published recently on Cindy McCain.

The View is one of those shows that proves that there is nothing on television so silly and occasionally so repugnant that someone will not want to be on it, to get face time on TV, to push a new book or album or something or, in the case of Bill O'Reilly, because they just like to fight.

And fight Bill O'Reilly did. Besides calling Barack Obama a communist, which he later modified to "socialist", he mocked Joy Behar, suggesting that someone with her first name should be happier than she is and then called her a "kool aid drinker." O'Reilly accused Keith Olberman, the far left news anchor on MSNBC, of being jealous. O'Reilly, to show his even-handedness, even took a gentle shot at Sarah Palin and referenced the current wardrobe kerfuffle.

Joy Behar, with the help of Barbara Walter, gave as good as she got. She accused O'Reilly of drinking kool aid for George W. Bush, which he denied. She said that she "disliked" Bill O'Reilly and didn't believe anything he said. Showing O'Reilly's picture as a child, Joy Behar suggested that is what the devil will look like when he comes.

AP presidential poll: Race tightens in final weeks

The presidential race tightened after the final debate, with John McCain gaining among whites and people earning less than $50,000, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll that shows McCain and Barack Obama essentially running even among likely voters in the election homestretch.

The poll, which found Obama at 44 percent and McCain at 43 percent, supports what some Republicans and Democrats privately have said in recent days: that the race narrowed after the third debate as GOP-leaning voters drifted home to their party and McCain's "Joe the plumber" analogy struck a chord.

Three weeks ago, an AP-GfK survey found that Obama had surged to a seven-point lead over McCain, lifted by voters who thought the Democrat was better suited to lead the nation through its sudden economic crisis.

The contest is still volatile, and the split among voters is apparent less than two weeks before Election Day.

"I trust McCain more, and I do feel that he has more experience in government than Obama. I don't think Obama has been around long enough," said Angela Decker, 44, of La Porte, Ind.

But Karen Judd, 58, of Middleton, Wis., said, "Obama certainly has sufficient qualifications." She said any positive feelings about McCain evaporated with "the outright lying" in TV ads and his choice of running mate Sarah Palin, who "doesn't have the correct skills."

The new AP-GfK head-to-head result is a departure from some, but not all, recent national polls.

Obama and McCain were essentially tied among likely voters in the latest George Washington University Battleground Poll, conducted by Republican strategist Ed Goeas and Democratic pollster Celinda Lake. In other surveys focusing on likely voters, a Washington Post-ABC News poll and a Wall Street Journal-NBC News survey have Obama up by 11 points, and a poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center has him leading by 14.

Polls are snapshots of highly fluid campaigns. In this case, there is a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points; that means Obama could be ahead by as many as 8 points or down by as many as 6. There are many reasons why polls differ, including methods of estimating likely voters and the wording of questions.

Charles Franklin, a University of Wisconsin political science professor and polling authority, said variation between polls occurs, in part, because pollsters interview random samples of people.

"If they all agree, somebody would be doing something terribly wrong," he said of polls. But he also said that surveys generally fall within a few points of each other, adding, "When you get much beyond that, there's something to explain."

The AP-GfK survey included interviews with a nationally representative random sample totaling 1,101 adults, including 931 registered voters and 800 adults deemed likely to vote. For the entire sample, the survey showed Obama ahead 47 percent to 37 percent. He was up by five points among all registered voters, including the likely voters.

A significant number of the interviews were conducted by dialing a randomly selected sample of cell phone numbers, and thus this poll had a chance to reach voters who were excluded from some other polls.

It was taken over five days from Thursday through Monday, starting the night after the candidates' final debate and ending the day after former Secretary of State Colin Powell broke with the Republican Party to endorse Obama.

McCain's strong showing is partly attributable to his strong debate performance; Thursday was his best night of the survey. Obama's best night was Sunday, hours after the Powell announcement, and the full impact of that endorsement may not have been captured in any surveys yet. Future polling could show whether either of those was merely a support "bounce" or something more lasting.

During their final debate, a feisty McCain repeatedly forced Obama to defend his record, comments and associations. He also used the story of a voter whom the Democrat had met in Ohio, "Joe the Plumber," to argue that Obama's tax plan would be bad for working class voters.

"I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody," Obama told the man with the last name of Wurzelbacher, who had asked Obama whether his plan to increase taxes on those earning more than $250,000 a year would impede his ability to buy the plumbing company where he works.

On Wednesday, McCain's campaign unveiled a new TV ad that features that Obama quote, and shows different people saying: "I'm Joe the Plumber." A man asks: "Obama wants my sweat to pay for his trillion dollars in new spending?"

Since McCain has seized on that line of argument, he has picked up support among white, married people and non-college educated whites, the poll shows, while widening his advantage among white men. Black voters still overwhelmingly support Obama.

The Republican also has improved his rating for handling the economy and the financial crisis. Nearly half of likely voters think their taxes will rise under an Obama administration compared with a third who say McCain would raise their taxes.

Since the last AP-GfK survey in late September, McCain also has:

_Posted big gains among likely voters earning under $50,000 a year; he now trails Obama by just 4 percentage points compared with 26 earlier.

_Surged among rural voters; he has an 18-point advantage, up from 4.

_Doubled his advantage among whites who haven't finished college and now leads by 20 points. McCain and Obama are running about even among white college graduates, no change from earlier.

_Made modest gains among whites of both genders, now leading by 22 points among white men and by 7 among white women.

_Improved slightly among whites who are married, now with a 24-point lead.

_Narrowed a gap among unmarried whites, though he still trails by 8 points.

McCain has cut into Obama's advantage on the questions of whom voters trust to handle the economy and the financial crisis. On both, the Democrat now leads by just 6 points, compared with 15 in the previous survey.

Obama still has a larger advantage on other economic measures, with 44 percent saying they think the economy will have improved a year from now if he is elected compared with 34 percent for McCain.

Intensity has increased among McCain's supporters.

A month ago, Obama had more strong supporters than McCain did. Now, the number of excited supporters is about even.

Eight of 10 Democrats are supporting Obama, while nine in 10 Republicans are backing McCain. Independents are about evenly split.

Some 24 percent of likely voters were deemed still persuadable, meaning they were either undecided or said they might switch candidates. Those up-for-grabs voters came about equally from the three categories: undecideds, McCain supporters and Obama backers.

Said John Ormesher, 67, of Dandridge, Tenn.: "I've got respect for them but that's the extent of it. I don't have a whole lot of affinity toward either one of them. They're both part of the same political mess."

Big man Pierre Henderson-Niles weighs in on bid for playing

Every night, Pierre Henderson-Niles approaches a scale leading to the Finch Center locker room for the verdict on whether he has moved closer to playing a major role for the University of Memphis this season.

So it was no small matter Wednesday when the 6-foot-8 Henderson-Niles checked in at fewer than 300 pounds, reaching another milestone in this last, desperate attempt to save his basketball career.

"Finally," he said. "299. Took me a couple of weeks. I'll get there, though."

After appearing, at times, to be waging a hopeless battle against the scales, Henderson-Niles seems to have finally turned a corner. Though he still has work to do -- coach John Calipari wants him to play at 280 pounds -- it's already a long way from the 350 he weighed at the end of last season.

And the difference has been obvious in early workouts. Wednesday, for example, was arguably the best practice Henderson-Niles has had at Memphis, showing the nimble feet and quick hands that made him dominant at Ridgeway High School.

Now heading into his junior year, Henderson-Niles is giving Calipari hope that he doesn't just have a serviceable backup to Shawn Taggart but a true contributor in the post.

"He's doing good," Calipari said. "Can he sustain it? After a practice like he just had, where he looked like an animal the entire time and didn't stop, does he go home and look in the mirror and say, 'This makes me feel so good, I can't wait for tomorrow.' Or does he go back and say, 'I can't do this. This is crazy.'

"Nothing would make me happier than this kid continuing to lose the weight and play how he's playing because this city would treat him like they treated Joey (Dorsey). They love comeback stories in this city."

Henderson-Niles' track record -- 1.1 points and 1.5 rebounds for his career -- doesn't inspire confidence that he'll come close to Dorsey territory. But to understand the deep hole he's digging out of, it's important to remember how his career got derailed.

During his first practice in a Tiger uniform, Henderson-Niles suffered a right knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery.

Until that point, Henderson-Niles had been used to eating whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. And when he didn't change his habits after the surgery, when he suddenly wasn't exercising, his weight ballooned.

"When I got here, I wasn't even too heavy," he said. "I was like 280 pounds. Then I messed my knee up, and that just put the weight back on me. We were eating every day. Cal would feed us, feed us and I can't just sit there and watch food and watch my teammates eat."

Though he came back from the injury early in the season, Henderson-Niles was never able to mount a serious challenge for playing time. Then, last season, he had difficulty ginning up the motivation to change his eating habits, knowing he wouldn't be taking minutes away from Dorsey or Taggart.

"So now I don't eat after 8 (p.m.)," he said. "For dinner, I'll eat a salad or something."

For Henderson-Niles, the discipline was born out of desperation. After last season, Calipari was willing to give him another chance, but only if he signed a contract with specific weight-loss goals. Now, having lost 50 pounds, Henderson-Niles is finding motivation every day from his performance on the court.

"Now I can jump higher, move quicker, better footwork," he said. "Everything I did in high school is coming back to me slowly but surely.

"Everybody knows I had a weight problem and everything, but I've always been a player."

And as the player in Henderson-Niles emerges, his teammates have grown increasingly energized about the prospect of what he can give the Tigers this season.

"He's doing things I haven't seen him do in awhile," junior guard Willie Kemp said

Three dead, 179 arrested in MNS violence at Thane

Three persons were killed and over 170 arrested in neighbouring Thane after violence erupted there following the arrest of MNS leader Raj Thackeray, police said.
Three deaths were reported in the Pisoli village area in Kalyan last night following a clash between two groups, Thane Police Commissioner Anil Dhere said. "We have made 179 arrests in the Thane commissionerate area since last night in connection with violence," Dhere said.
The three dead have been identified as Omprakash Dubey, Mayur Dubey and Gurunath Bhoir, the brother of a local MNS leader.
Asked if the clash between the two groups took place in the wake of MNS activists targeting north Indian community members living there, the Commissioner said the matter was being investigated.
"We are still investigating whether the clash between the two groups was a result of a clash between MNS activists and north Indians or due to past enmity," Dhere said. The town, with a population of about 5,000 persons, has witnessed high security since the incident but curfew has not been imposed, he said.
The town has witnessed clashes between groups of resident members of the north Indian community and MNS activists in the past.
Violence erupted in Kalyan and surrounding areas last night after arrested MNS leader Raj Thackeray was taken to the Manpada police station in Dombivali in connection with the assault on candidates who appeared for railway recruitment exams on October 19.

Curfew in Kalyan, train ablaze in Bihar

Situation is tense in Maharashtra’s Kalyan town, where Raj Thackeray is expected to be produced before a magisterial court later today. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief was arrested by the Mumbai Police in Ratnagiri yesterday and charged with provoking hatred among communities and endangering public safety. The authorities have imposed a preventive curfew in Kalyan beginning 11.00 am to ensure peace. Section 144 is already in place there. There are reports that police have resorted to lathi charge and fired teargas to disperse MNS supporters outside the Kalyan court. Further, arson has also been reported from Bihar’s Barh where two AC bogies of Danapur-Durg South Bihar Express were set on fire by angry students. In New Delhi, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2.00 pm amid uproar over violence in parts of Maharashtra following Raj’s arrest. Meanwhile, a Vikroli court has issued a notice to Raj, asking him why his bail should not be cancelled. The court has instructed the MNS chief to reply within a day. The court issued the notice to Raj, saying he violated a condition attached with the bail not to make inciting speeches. Raj spent the night at the Manpada lock-up and police station in Dombivili town of Thane district, near Mumbai. The police had put up a strong security ring around the lock-up, with additional personnel from the Rapid Action Force and State Reserve Police Force. Raj’s wife is sitting on a dharna along with several MNS supporters outside the Manpada police station. The situation in Mumbai and other parts of the state, meanwhile, is tense but peaceful. MNS activists had gone on the rampage here and in many parts of the state yesterday after their chief’s arrest. Thackeray, who was arrested last morning in Ratnagiri, 250 km from here, will be produced before the Kalyan court in connection with a case filed by the police for attacking North Indian candidates who were appearing at a railway recruitment examination last Sunday. The 40-year-old Thackeray – an amateur cartoonist known till less than a year ago essentially as Bal Thackeray's nephew who split from the Shiv Sena to form the MNS – was charged with provoking hatred among communities as well rioting, assault and damage to property after his supporters on Sunday added another chapter to their campaign against non-Maharashtrians. Raj, whose arrest was effected by the Maharashtra government in four separate cases, spent the night in lock-up despite being granted bail. Raj, who had dared the Vilasrao Deshmukh government to arrest him, was produced before the metropolitan court in Bandra yesterday which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody. However, Raj's lawyer immediately moved a bail application after which the court granted him bail on furnishing a bond of Rs 15,000. But police quickly took him back in custody for a similar case in neighbouring Dombivali, in Thane district and whisked him away. Since he could not reach in time, Raj will be produced before the court today, his lawyers said. While granting the bail, Metropolitan Magistrate GR Wankhede asked Thackeray to refrain from threatening or influencing witnesses in any manner, avoid creating any violent situation, and also report for an hour to the Kherwadi Police station for seven days, daily at 11.00 am to help with the investigations. Raj has four cases registered against him for attack on ‘outsiders’, including those at Kherwadi and Kanjurmarg in Mumbai and ones at Thane and Dombivali, SPP in the Kherwadi case Majid Memon said. In Kherwadi case, Thackeray has been charged with provoking riot, assaulting public servants, endangering public safety of others, causing mischief and damage to property. Shortly after the arrest, MNS activists went on a rampage in parts of Mumbai, Nashik, Solapur and Kolhapur attacking shops and pelting stones at scores of buses and taxis. A toll booth in Mulund was targetted and one of the counters was set on fire, police said. Police made about 2,000 preventive arrests and resorted to lathi charge at several places. MNS activists had attacked North Indians candidates who appeared in railway board examination at a centre in Kherwadi in Bandra here on Sunday. Similar attacks took place in neighbouring Thane and Kalyan too. On Tuesday, the police also imposed a two-month gag order on Raj, thus preventing him from addressing public rallies and talking to the media. Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil yesterday said that the Centre had sent at least three advisories to the Maharashtra government in the wake of attacks on North Indians by MNS activists. Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil told reporters the government may consider banning MNS. He also said that his government was planning to bring in an ordinance under which destruction of public property could invite hefty penalty and jail of upto five years.

Kobe Bryant Hyperextends Right Knee

That loud noise you heard late Tuesday evening was not an attack on the nation. Naaahh, it was just the collective gasp of Lakers fans across the country after word of Kobe Bryant injuring his right knee hit the wire. It's not like you can blame them for that (over)reaction, as they just came off a season where a knee injury to star center Andrew Bynum prevented their favorite team from reaching its full potential.
KB24 was injured when he knocked knees with teammate Josh Powell on a rebound attempt late in the first half of Tuesday night's game against the Bobcats. He had four points in 14 minutes of play, but failed to return after limping off the floor late in the second quarter. It looked like this:
Anyhow, Lakers fans can step back from the ledge. Kobe will be fine. It's just a hyperextended knee.
Lakers P.R. guru John Black says the team is listing him as day-to-day, but knowing Kobe's propensity for overcoming injury, he likely won't miss any time at all. As a precaution, the Lakers might want to consider forcing him to sit out the rest of the pre-season. The Lakers will re-examine the knee on Wednesday

Sena targets Lalu; takes credit for disrupting Railway exams

Keen to reinforce its pro-Marathi agenda in the face of aggressive stand on the issue by MNS chief Raj Thackeray who is hogging limelight, the Shiv Sena today sought to take credit for thwarting the scheduled Railway exams in Mumbai, saying they were arranged "exclusively" for Biharis. An editorial in the party mouthpiece `Saamana', which flayed Railway Minister Lalu Prasad for his "anti-Maharashtrian" stand in recruitment in Railways, played down the role of MNS in jolting the exam. It said the recruitment of "bhaiyyas" was stopped by Shiv Sainiks who agitated at the exam centres in Mumbai.MNS workers too arrived waving their flags but it was the valour of Shiv Sainiks that finally clinched the issue leading to cancellation of the exams, the editorial claimed. In a departure from its earlier assertion that Shiv Sainiks too had bashed up the candidates from north India at railway stations in the metropolis on October 19, the paper said the MNS workers were responsible for the attack on Biharis asleep on railway platforms. It also carried a statement by Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray saying that the Sainiks would never resort to a cowardly attack on people in their sleep.Lambasting the Railway Minister, Saamana said, "The Railway Board exams for recruitment covered only the Yadavs coming from Bihar and nobody from other states, including Uttar Pradesh."

PSLV-C11 carrying Chandrayaan lifts off

PSLV-C11 carrying India's first unmanned moon spacecraft Chandrayaan-1 lifted off successfully from ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Centre here on Wednesday.
At the end of the 49-hour countdown, the 44.4 metre tall four-stage PSLV-C11 blasted off from the second launch pad with the ignition of the core first stage. Scientists cheered as the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) weighing 316 tonnes at the time of launch, soared majestically into partially cloudy sky at 6.22 am from the space port, 100 km north of Chennai. This is the 14th flight of ISRO's workhorse PSLV, which had launched 29 satellites into a variety of orbits since 1993.
This launch vehicle uses larger strap-on motors to achieve higher payload capability. The Chandrayaan-1 is carrying 11 payloads, five entirely designed and developed in India, three from European Space Agency, one from Bulgaria and two from US, which wou ld explore the Moon. The rocket would place the spacecraft in a transfer orbit around the earth shortly.

India complete crushing win over Australia

India completed a crushing victory over Australia by a record margin of 320 runs in the second test on Tuesday to seize a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.
Left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan grabbed three wickets in four balls and Australia, chasing an improbable victory target of 516 runs, were dismissed for 195 before lunch.
It was only Australia's second defeat in 28 tests since their 2-1 loss in the 2005 Ashes series against England. Both reverses have come against India.
"We were outplayed," Australia captain Ricky Ponting told reporters. "In batting, bowling and probably in fielding as well."
It was India's biggest ever test win by runs, bettering their 280-run success over South Africa in Kanpur in 1996.
Khan struck in the first over to dismiss Brad Haddin and snuff out any slim Australian hopes of salvaging a draw.
Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke top-scored with 69 before being the last man out, pulling leg spinner Amit Mishra to mid-wicket.
Mishra finished with a match haul of seven for 106 after claiming five wickets in the first innings on his test debut.
An off-colour Australia, reduced to 141 for five overnight, subsided against pace and spin on a slow Mohali pitch.
Khan struck his first blow when he bowled Haddin on his overnight score of 37 with a perfect off-stump yorker.
In the next over, he forced Cameron White (1) to edge a drive to give wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni a low catch and he bowled Brett Lee first ball to be on a hat-trick.
Clarke, who added 84 runs for the sixth wicket with Haddin, put on another 50 for the ninth with Mitchell Johnson (26) before Mishra had the tail-ender caught and bowled.
Harbhajan Singh took five wickets in the match to leave himself one short of becoming the third Indian bowler to claim 300 test wickets.
Sachin Tendulkar claimed the world record for most test runs and Saurav Ganguly struck 102 in his farewell series to help India amass 469 in their first innings.
The first test in Bangalore ended in a draw. The third test starts in New Delhi on Oct. 29.

Iraqi leader postpones visit to Australia

THE Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, has abruptly postponed his visit to Australia this month so he can continue intense discussions with the United States over a controversial security deal.
Washington and Baghdad are in the middle of negotiating an accord that would set terms for the presence of American forces in Iraq after the UN mandate expires in December.
Key members of the Iraqi parliament's largest bloc yesterday called for all American troops to leave the country in 2011, as a condition for allowing the US military to stay beyond year's end, officials said.
The change sought by the influential United Iraqi Alliance would harden the withdrawal date for US troops. A draft bilateral agreement had required American forces to leave by December 2011, but allowed for an extension by mutual agreement.
The Shiite bloc, which includes Mr Maliki's Dawa party, also insists that Iraqi officials have a bigger role in determining whether US soldiers accused of wrongdoing are subject to prosecution in Iraqi courts, said Sami al-Askeri, a political adviser to Mr Maliki. If the Iraqi Alliance's conditions are not met, "I cannot see that this agreement will see the light," said Mr Askeri, who is also a politician from Mr Maliki's party.
The United Iraqi Alliance includes politicians close to Shiite-dominated Iran. The concerns voiced by the Shiite politicians represent a significant stumbling block in what many US and Iraqi officials anticipate will be a contentious process that could take weeks - if it succeeds at all.
It was not immediately clear if the US side would accept the changes to the draft agreement.
If there is no accord or other legal cover for US forces by December 31, they must leave.
The Bush Administration has long resisted setting firm dates for the departure of US troops from Iraq, saying that the decision should be based on security conditions. US authorities ultimately accepted a compromise, which set the 2011 withdrawal date but provided for an extension if Iraq requested one.
The draft status of forces agreement was discussed on Sunday night by the Iraqi Political Council for National Security. In the meeting, Iraq's defence and interior ministers told colleagues that the security forces created since the fall of Saddam Hussein were still incapable of defending the country, according to a presidential spokesman, Nasir al-Ani.
The ministers said Iraq's security forces "still have no air cover and don't have the ability to suppress any attacks" from foreign countries, Mr Ani told Iraq's al-Sharqiya television.
Mahmoud Othman, a politician from the Kurdish bloc, the second-biggest in parliament, said the escalation in demands by the Shiite alliance could represent politicians' desire to position themselves before provincial elections expected in the next few months. Many Iraqis resent the American presence, seeing it as a violation of national sovereignty.
Another factor was that politicians "are trying to buy time. Some are thinking to delay until the next administration that emerges from the US presidential election, he said.
